The 2012 competition introduced an innovative case study produced by the Yale School of Management in conjunction with Tecnológico de Monterrey that asks students to imagine themselves in the shoes of Manuel Gómez Peña, Director of Sustainability for Walmart de México y Centroamérica, as he considers future renewable energy projects and investments by his company across Mexico. In addition to a thorough financial analysis, students examine the appropriateness of Walmart's policy of requiring that sustainability projects meet the same investment criteria as other projects. Are there other criteria, such as societal impacts or being viewed as an environmental leader by key stakeholders, which Walmart de México should take into consideration? How can Walmart integrate these additional criteria while continuing to meet the company's goal of delivering high value to its customers?
